Dear Parents, Students and Friends
I am humbled and deeply honoured to share the news of my appointment as Principal of St Mary MacKillop Catholic College, Canberra. As I prepare for this new chapter, my heart is full of gratitude for the past seven years at Carroll College, Broulee. It has been a true privilege to serve a community I love so dearly, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together. The spirit, faith, and resilience of Carroll College have shaped me both personally and professionally, and I will always carry that with me. While it will be difficult to say goodbye, I will do so with a profound sense of pride and affection, and with excitement for the opportunity to continue serving Catholic education in our Archdiocese at MacKillop from 2026. I have served as Principal across our K-12 Catholic Pathway schools on the Coast for 21 years, so a new challenge awaits in Canberra. I will have more to say as we come to the end of the school year, but I want to take this moment to express my deep appreciation for the Carroll College community. The formal announcement from the Executive Director, David de Carvalho has been included in this newsletter edition.
CECG Visitors
We have had several visitors this week from head office in Canberra. On Tuesday, Patrick Ellis – Education Lead and Maria O’Donnell – Senior Officer Teaching and Learning met with Andrew Kenneally, Erica Drewsen, Jason Szkwarek and I to discuss our teaching and learning initiatives. I’ve highlighted some of what was discussed below.
Professional Learning Teams
This year, the structure and focus of three staff meetings per term has taken a new direction. These meetings have been dedicated to Professional Learning Teams (PLTs), where staff collaborate to explore High Impact Teaching Practices, share pedagogy (the way we teach), and work together to improve student outcomes.
At Carroll College, we are committed to high-impact teaching practices that support clear instruction, active engagement, and effective feedback to improve student outcomes.
Through dedicated Professional Learning Teams (PLTs), staff collaborate regularly to reflect on pedagogy, share strategies, and use data to inform teaching. We value continuous professional growth and a student-centred approach, ensuring every learner is challenged, supported, and able to succeed.
On Wednesday, our newly appointed School Performance and Development Leader, Philippa Brearley, met with the College Executive team to engage in purposeful discussions about our strategic direction for 2026 and beyond. Carroll College continues to lead the way in innovative teaching and learning, embracing new tools and approaches to enhance practice. We are delighted to welcome Philippa to her new role and look forward to her support of our K–12 Catholic schools along the Coast.
This week, our visitors once again experienced the signature hospitality of Carroll College. A highlight was the outstanding work of our Years 9 and 10 Food Technology students, who prepared delicious acai bowls under the guidance of Mr Bissell. Their creativity and presentation were most impressive!

Announcement of the 2026 Student Leadership Team
It gives me great joy to announce the 2026 Carroll College Student Leadership Team. These students have been chosen not only for their commitment to our College but also for the values they demonstrate each day in their learning, relationships, and service to others.
Leadership at Carroll College is not about titles or positions - it is about responsibility, example, and service. Our leaders are called to live out the Gospel values of respect, integrity, compassion and courage, and to represent their peers with honesty and humility. They will be entrusted with the privilege of shaping the culture of our College, supporting younger students, and working with staff to strengthen our community spirit.
As Principal, I am immensely proud of the students who have accepted this responsibility. Their willingness to lead reflects both their personal character and the inspiration they draw from our College Patrons - Caroline Chisholm, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and St Francis Xavier—who each modelled leadership through faith, service and a vision for others.
To the 2026 Student Leadership Team: I congratulate you on this important appointment and look forward to hearing about your growth in confidence, influence and faith. Together, you will inspire others and leave a lasting legacy for those who follow.

“The Holy Spirit reminds us first and foremost that we are children loved by God – everyone equal in God’s love, and everyone different.” (Pope Francis)
Today marks a very special day in the life of Carroll College as we bring together faith, learning, and service in action. We are delighted to welcome the Canberra–Goulburn Vinnies Youth Team to our College. Throughout the day, they will be visiting selected classes to run engaging workshops on social justice and the mission of St Vincent de Paul, before presenting at our Year 8 Pastoral Day. Their message of compassion and hope will challenge our students to reflect on how they can respond to the needs of others in practical and meaningful ways.
This evening, the Vinnies Youth Team will also join us for our annual Winter Sleepout. Students, staff, and community members will come together to spend the night in solidarity with those experiencing homelessness. The Sleepout is not just a symbolic gesture; it is an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the struggles faced by so many in our local community and across Australia. Funds raised tonight will go directly to supporting the vital work of Vinnies, and we are incredibly grateful for the generosity already shown by our families and supporters.
Alongside these events, we also take a moment to celebrate our own Youth Ministry Team, who yesterday led the Year 4 Sacramental Retreat Day with St Bernard’s and St Mary’s. Their maturity, creativity, and leadership were on full display as they guided younger students in prayer, reflection, and learning. Their example reminds us that when young people step up in faith, they can truly inspire others.
Today is a reminder that at Carroll College, faith is lived, not just learned. Whether through workshops, retreats, or sleeping out in the cold, our students are showing what it means to put Gospel values into action.

Rights and responsibilities were front and centre during the college assembly this week. The connection between these two terms was made very clear. We can expect to have our rights recognised but when living and working in a community we must acknowledge the responsibility we have to behaviour in a correct way so that we do not encroach or detract from the rights of others.
We covered 5 key student rights and examples of the correct student behaviour that supports them.
The right to be treated with respect, politeness and honesty.
The right to be happy, to be treated with understanding and to have a sense of belonging.
The right to obtain maximum benefit from all lessons.
The right to feel safe and protected at all times and the right for my property to be respected.
The right to share a pleasant, clean and well-maintained school environment with others.
Year 8 Pastoral Day
The 2025 Jubilee year theme is “Pilgrims of Hope”. It is very fitting that the theme of Hope was chosen to be the focus for the Year 8 Pastoral Day. Hope for the world, our communities and ourselves. During the day the students had time for prayer, reflection, learning about themselves and spending time with their peers. Thank you to the Pastoral team for their creativity in meeting the needs of our students and for delivery this thought provoking day. Thank you also to Mrs Whiteman for preparing a delicious lunch.
Attention all Year 12 students and families
Each year, the Batemans Bay Youth Foundation offers student grants to Year 12 students who reside in the Eurobodalla bounded by Durras North, Nelligen and the Moruya River. The $3500 grants are available for students that intend to further their education at University or TAFE. This generous grant can be used to assist students with living expenses and the cost of training and education associated with their chosen career.
Last year, Emma Penberthy, Grace Johnston, Shelby Henderson and Tahlia Stjepanovic from Year 12 2024 were successful with their application for this grant.
Applications are open in September and close on 30 November 2025.
For further information and the application form, please go to www.bbyf.org.au
Thank you to the Batemans Bay Youth Foundation for this invaluable support of our local students.
Kind regards

Dear Carroll College Community,
It is hard to believe we are now entering week 6 of term 3 at Carroll College. The term is flying, as we are witnessing several key events occurring across the campus. Stages 4 and 5 are currently consolidating their learning with submissions of both formative and summative tasks, with a close focus on high impact teaching practices. Last week the Trial Higher School Certificate (HSC) exams concluded for the current year 12 cohort. As our senior students move into the final weeks, it is time to highlight the importance of students returning to school for valuable feedback.
The Trial HSC exams serve as mock battlegrounds where students get a taste of the challenges that await them in the final HSC exams. However, these mock exams are not just about testing knowledge; they are also about assessing performance, identifying weaknesses, and discovering areas that need improvement.
Returning to school after the Trial HSC exams provides students with a precious opportunity to engage with their teachers and receive personalised feedback. This feedback guides students toward areas they need to focus on. The Trial HSC exams are learning experiences in themselves, they reveal how well students manage time, handle stress, and adapt to exam settings. It's a chance to dissect what worked and what didn't, to optimise time management, and to build mental resilience.
The final weeks leading up to the HSC exams are akin to the final laps of a race. This is when consistency matters most. Returning to school in the final weeks helps students maintain their study routine, keeping them immersed in an environment conducive to learning. It's far easier to be disciplined and focused within the structured school environment than trying to replicate it at home. I encourage all of Year 12 to embrace this phase with enthusiasm, recognising it as a catalyst for growth and achievement.
Year 11 will be embarking on the preliminary examinations in Week 8. I had the opportunity to meet with the year group during Academic Care this week and I highlighted that the examinations are an opportunity to showcase their knowledge and dedication, and I encouraged students to approach them with a positive mindset. The following suggestions are a good way to break down the exams into manageable chunks:
1. Organise your study schedule.
Creating a well-structured study plan is essential for effective exam preparation. Break down your subjects into manageable sections and allocate specific time slots for each. A balanced approach prevents burnout and ensures comprehensive coverage of the curriculum. Remember to include breaks for relaxation and rejuvenation.
2. Review class notes regularly
Your class notes are invaluable resources. Regularly reviewing them reinforces your understanding of the concepts taught in class. Consider condensing your notes into concise summaries or flashcards, making revision more efficient and focused.
3. Utilise additional resources
Textbooks, online tutorials, and your google classrooms can provide alternate explanations and examples. These resources can offer a fresh perspective on challenging topics, enhancing your understanding. Don't hesitate to ask teachers or peers for clarification if you encounter difficulties.
4. Practice past papers
Engaging with past exam papers gives you insight into the exam format and the types of questions asked. It also aids in time management and boosts your confidence by familiarising you with the exam environment. After completing a paper, review your answers to identify areas for improvement.
5. Put it into your own words
Passive reading is not as effective as active learning. Summarise chapters in your own words, teach concepts to others, or create mind maps. These techniques enhance memory retention and comprehension.
6. Stay healthy
Physical and mental well-being significantly impact your performance. Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and ensure adequate sleep. Manage stress through relaxation techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises. Reduce your part time work hours to assist in a good school and life balance.
7. Use the hub and form a study group
Collaborating with classmates can provide varied perspectives and explanations. Explaining concepts to others reinforces your understanding, and you might learn from their insights as well. Consider forming a study group during the examination period and use the hub to collaborate with peers.
8. Simulate exam conditions
Conduct mock exams under timed conditions to simulate the actual test environment. This practice enhances your time management skills and reduces anxiety on the exam day.
9. Believe in yourself
Confidence plays a pivotal role in your performance. Remind yourself of your accomplishments and the effort you've put into your studies. Trust in your abilities and focus on your growth throughout the year. I’m a firm believer that,
EFFORT = SUCCESS
The final senior exams for both Year 11 and 12, mark a significant step towards academic and personal development. I encourage all Stage 6 students to embrace this challenge as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. By following these strategies and maintaining a positive outlook, you'll be well-prepared to excel in your preliminary and HSC examinations.
Best wishes

Progressive Achievement Tests – Spelling
Next week, Years 7 to 10 students will complete their Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT) in Spelling. The PAT Spelling test is a standardised assessment that helps track students' development over time and identify areas needing support.
Year 7 – Wednesday 3 September, Period 1
Year 8 – Thursday 4 September, Period 1
Year 9 – Thursday 4 September, Period 4
Year 10 – Friday 5 September, Period 2
The PAT spelling assessment is a 20-minute test that:
· assesses knowledge of spelling and skills in identifying and correcting spelling errors.
· asks students to correct spelling errors in a written sentence.
· contains multiple-choice questions and typing of correct spelling.
All PAT spelling tests will be held in B-block, and students will complete the test on their own device. Students are required to bring their usual lesson equipment, as normal classes will continue once the test is finished.
Year 11 Examinations
The Year 11 Examinations will be held in weeks 8 and 9. Students should prepare for their examinations by revising the year's work and other study material set by their class teacher. If students have questions regarding their exams, they are encouraged to talk to their class teachers. Good luck with your preparation, Year 11.

Social Justice Captain, Angus Blythe: During my captaincy, I have learnt many things about leadership and what it means to use your voice to make an impact on a community. Being a Social Justice Captain taught me that in order to create meaningful change, you must rely on the people around you to help make a difference in the world around you, whether it be asking for input on a mural quote or asking for a small donation. Additionally, I have learnt about how leadership is an umbrella term, made up of small steps that range from organising, planning, promoting, and role modelling. However, these are only possible if you rely on your peers, co-captain and teachers for help. The Winter Sleepout, The Blue Tree Mural, the Caritas fundraising and the MND Icebucket challenge are initiatives that underscore the importance of social justice in our community, and how if you look close enough, it is everything that Carroll College stands for.

It has been another busy few weeks for sport at CCB! Students have been participating in League Tag, our Annual Snow Excursion, Archdiocesan Athletics and students have been busy training for Archdiocesan Basketball, Netball and State Cup Touch Football.
Kezie Apps League Tag -
On Tuesday the 12 August, five of our Carroll College girls’ league tag teams, from Years 7- 10, travelled to Hanging Rock, Batemans Bay to take part in the annual Eurobodalla Kezie Apps League Tag Day.
We proudly fielded two Under 14s teams and three Under 16s teams. Across the board, our players represented Carroll College with outstanding team spirit, teamwork, and inclusion.
In the Under 14s, the Carroll College Bears had a truly fabulous day - going undefeated and remarkably not having a single try scored against them all day. In the Under 16s age group, the Carroll College Cowboys impressed as well, finishing with four wins and only one narrow loss.
A very special thank you goes to our sports coaches - Kobi, Jordyn, Sebastian, Harry, Aidan and Tarlaya. Their leadership, organisation and enthusiasm were clear to see, from running warm-ups and coaching from the sidelines, through to managing substitutions throughout the day. We would also like to thank our teachers, Mrs McAsh, Mrs Nicholson and Miss Johnston, for taking the teams on the day, and to Miss Large for her work in organising the event.
A big congratulations to our teams for their achievements on the field, their support of one another, and for carrying themselves as excellent representatives of Carroll College.

Snow Trip
During Week 5, 40 CCB students attended our annual snow trip to Thredbo.
To start, we’ve created an acronym using the word THREDBO to describe our experience:
T – Thrilling runs down the slopes
H – High energy and excitement every day
R – Resilience, as we all faced a few tumbles but kept getting back up
E – Epic scenery that made every moment unforgettable
D – Determination to master skiing or snowboarding
B – Berridale, our home away from home for the trip
O – Outstanding effort from everyone to learn and improve.
Our trip began on Wednesday afternoon when we left school and headed to Berridale, with a quick stop at Brown Mountain lookout. When we arrived at the lodge, we settled in, had dinner, and then prepared for the snow by getting all our gear ready – helmets, skis or snowboards, jackets, and everything else we’d need for the slopes.
On Thursday, we headed into Thredbo for the first time. The views were incredible, and the atmosphere on the bus was full of excitement. When we arrived, some students tried skiing for the first time while others went snowboarding, and by the end of the two days everyone had grown so much in confidence.
Thursday was great because we didn’t have to wake up too early – our first lesson didn’t start until 10:30am, so we had time for a big breakfast and to get ready. After the lesson, we had the rest of the day to ski or snowboard and practise what we learned. By the end of the day, we were all exhausted, so we turned in early and watched the NRL game before bed.
On Friday, we had some free time in the morning to explore and practise before our second lesson later in the day. Everyone kept improving, and by the end, we were all much more comfortable on the snow.
Back at the lodge in Berridale, we ate like champions! There was plenty of food to keep us fueled up, and on the slopes, many of us couldn’t resist grabbing hot coffee and donuts to warm up and recharge.
On the way home, we made the traditional stop at Cooma Macca’s and KFC for one last feed before the trip back.
Overall, the students had a great trip and many will look forward to returning next year!
Finally, we’d like to give a big thank you to Mr Fogarty, Mr Coates, Mrs Enfield, Mr Nebelung, Ms Wignell, Mrs Jamieson and Mrs McAsh for organising and looking after us throughout the trip.
We are sure many students are looking forward to the trip next year!
Thank you - Mrs Jamieson.

On Friday 22 August, 20 students were taken out to Mogo Mountain Bike Park for our second day of riding. Although the trials were a little wet from the previous day's rain, we were able to stay mostly dry and mud free and experience an amazing day on the bikes. We covered over 14km of riding with no injuries and no bike issues, and the students represented themselves and the College with great pride.
We have already built a strong relationship with Ride Mogo bike shop, where students have been able to access expert bike support and equipment from Angus and his team. For future College riding days, the Batemans Bay Mountain Bike Club has offered to run a free BBQ for our students at the end of the ride to help build more community partnerships and relationships with the club and the store. We welcome this upcoming opportunity and will look to continue to build more community partnerships.
I encourage serious mountain bikers to consider registering for the upcoming Sea Otter Mountain Bike festival, where there is a schools race. I have linked the website below.

College Delegates Shine at Model United Nations Assembly in Canberra
Last weekend, from August 15 to 17, three Year 11 students, Sophee McFadyen, Emily Rossetto, and Alyssa Dedakis, proudly represented our College at the prestigious Model United Nations Assembly held at the Museum of Australian Democracy (Old Parliament House) in Canberra. Acting as delegates for Canada, the team engaged in lively and thoughtful debate on six crucial global resolutions focused on human rights and peace and security.
Over the three days, Sophee, Emily, and Alyssa demonstrated exceptional diplomatic skills, critical thinking, and teamwork as they navigated complex international issues with fellow student delegates from across the country. Their commitment to understanding diverse perspectives and working towards consensus embodied the spirit of the United Nations.
This experience not only deepened their knowledge of global affairs but also developed key skills in negotiation, public speaking, and leadership that will serve them well in their future studies and careers.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Rotary Moruya for their generous sponsorship, supporting our College’s participation in this valuable learning opportunity each year. Special thanks also go to Rotary Canberra Sunrise for hosting this outstanding annual event and providing a platform for young leaders to engage with pressing world challenges.
Thank you also to Anna Voysey-McManus who organised Team Canada’s outfits for this event. They looked wonderful and unmistakably Canadian!
Congratulations to Sophee, Emily, and Alyssa on their outstanding representation of the College and for contributing to meaningful discussions about human rights and global peace.

A highlight of the session was reconnecting with former students Sophie McAteer and Autumn Rankin, who are both completing their nursing degrees at the UOW Batemans Bay campus. It is an inspiring reminder of the local pathways available for students who are aspiring healthcare professionals.
